Imago Relationship Therapy is a therapeutic approach through which couples are assisted to build deeper, more connected relationships, by understanding the unconscious factors that influence their behaviours and interactions. The core premise is that individuals, on an unconscious level, choose partners who reflect both positive and negative traits of their parents or early caregivers. This unconscious attraction often leads to repetitive patterns of conflict in relationships. Through this approach, partners in a relationship are assisted to recognize these patterns and to learn to communicate more effectively. This is done through the Imago Dialogue, which focuses on mirroring (active listening), validation, and empathy.

Skills to make constructive dialogue possible are taught to couples in Imago Therapy. The Imago Dialogue encourages partners to listen to each other without judgment and reflect on the other partner’s feelings. This helps each partner to feel seen, heard and understood, which reduces defensiveness and brings about a deeper emotional connection. The dialogue is an instrument which facilitates the repairing or strengthening of connection between partners, creating safety in the relationship space.

The process also emphasizes the healing of wounds from the past. Relationships in adulthood can be influenced by unresolved childhood trauma, and by consciously dealing with these issues, partners can transform their relationship. The relationship can become a source of growth and healing for partners, instead of destructive, repeating cycles of conflict. A conscious relationship, where both partners feel seen, understood, validated, and supported, is the goal of the Imago process. Through this approach, couples can be enabled to move beyond blame and resentment. A deeper, more fulfilling, nurturing connection can develop, enabling mutual respect, love, and healing.

The Imago therapeutic approach provides an alternative lens through which relationships is viewed, emphasizing the strengthening of connection between partners and creating emotional safety in relationships.
